A New Pandemic Has Arrived- Pokemon Fever.
After having spread throughout Japan, Pokemon was released in North America. The first games were Red and Blue, compared to the Red and Green in Japan. The anime came first; being released on September 7th of 1998 and the games being released on the 30th of the same month. Then in January of 1999 the TCG (Trading Card Game) was also released. The Electric Tale of Picachu was translated to English and was a huge succes. The spin-off game developed by Game Freak (Pokemon Stadium) was a huge faliure when it was released, unlike Pokemon Red and Blue versions. [Edit by Mudkip: Pkmn Stadium was intended for the N64DD, which was a commercial failure. Pokemon Stadium was not necessarily a failure, but it met harsh criticism for its difficulty. This version was only released in Japan. Pokemon Stadium II was released later in Japan, Under the name of Pokemon Stadium I in NA and PAL regions]
To the surprise of the Pokemon developers, the Anime (Japanese Animation) series was a huge hit in the rest of the world. The anime centered around Ash (Satoshi in JAP) and his now-famous Pikachu. The release of the first Pokemon movie in the U.S was the highest grossing animated film for a while, which was shocking to the developers and proved that Pokemon was a success around the world.
Due to the success of the anime series, Pokemon Yellow, a game based on it was released in Japan and then the U.S and Europe. It was given it's name because you are doing the same adventures as Ash with Pikachu at your side throughout Kanto. The method of a Pokemon following you around was reused in Pokemon HeartGold and Pokemon SoulSilver released in March 2010. Throughout the game you eventually get all 3 starters. Your rival, Blue, or Gary, has an Eevee.
Pokemon spread like wildfire, and it still is spreading and evolving today. With the release of Pokemon Black and Pokemon White on the horizon, history is becoming today. And today is becoming history.
Until Next Issue,
-Bonsly
